a male observation

I was laying on my tummy in the back yard when I snapped these pictures of our standard local Blue Jay. He didn't notice me and he was acting unusually cute and
gentle.

Preening himself looking this way and that. Pudgy little birdie cute cute cute. But, let me tell you, as soon as he realized that I was in his territory, he jumped up above me and puffed out his chest.

He squawked loudly at me and kept huffing, puffing and jerking his wings out to the sides and then up and down.
"Jeez, enough with the show already...you're the male, I get it, I get it."
At first he was cute and then he became just down right annoying.

Later in the day my son called me just to see how I was doing (?) Now, Mark is a wonderful son, but he was sounding a little extra nice and cute :) So I finally said, "What do you want honey?" It was simple..."Oh, nothing...just a little tight on money, waiting for an overdue check" and has been eating out of his cupboards for a few days.

"Well, I am going to the grocery store tomorrow, but instead of grabbing a couple of extra items from the store, why don't I pick you up and we'll spend the day together?"
He immediately cheered up and I could actually hear his chest swell, as I had saved him from having to "ask" for my help. I thought of the Blue Jay and how one minute he was so so cute and the next he was the machismo mondo man/bird.

Men...are they all like this, no matter what their species?

More times than not, I am sad/glad/puzzled to say.

For some reason we don't want females to think we cannot do something.

As for the bird, he is probably hard-wired to protect his territory. Something to do with survival of the fittest, if there is such a thing.

As for Mark, I can only guess. Things have been tough for him to say the least. He knows how much you have done for him. He knows how much you have suffered through you personal health issues. He cares enough to NOT want to burden you anymore. He is yet to learn that through it all, a mother's love and need to nurture her children will overcome any and all obstacles. You might want to suggest to him that his needs, and calling on you for assistance may just be the therapy you need.

Perhaps he knows that already. If so, ignore the first sentence of this comment.

Great photos.

Keep on truckin'

My experience says YES. Even the ones who claim they aren't like that. What a funny post. And I'm glad you were able to help Mark in a way that made you both feel good.

You're beautiful.

On a completely more feminine subject altogether: When are you opening your online jewelry store?! I can't wait to browse through and order something yummy!! :) Not trying to put the pressure on or anything! Just wondering ;)

1. Sorry I haven't commented in such a long time. I am checking a lot though!! Love your blog and glad you are well!

2. It shocks me how different your blue jay looks from the blue jays here on the east coast. Ours have little crown - mohawk looking thingys.

3. I don't know much about males, but it is probably true for most species...even my kindergarten boys puff out their chests sometimes!!

:) I do that with my mum all the time, she always knows when I want somethings. It's very sweet of you to want to take away the need for him to ask, and a great way to turn the situation around, and of course it means you get to spend a great day together :)

Love the bird pics. It's not very often that you can catch such a clear picture of the chest puffing!
